Understanding the importance of iodine

Top benefits of iodine via seaweed 🌿

I'm sure you've already heard about iodine but do you have a solid understanding of its importance for our bodily functions? The difference from getting it in whole food form vs via fortified foods? Let's take a deep dive into how it works and what you can take to support your levels.

What do we need iodine for anyway?

Thyroid function - Iodine is needed for the production of the thyroid hormone. The thyroid gland uses iodine to make the thyroid hormone when blood levels of TSH rise. Diminished levels can lead to low thyroid function.

Pregnancy - Iodine is critical to maternal and fetal health, and requirement is increased during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is required for thyroid hormone synthesis and neurodevelopement.

Metabolic function - Iodine helps to regulate metabolic function and promote bone development. This is one of the components needed for the cells to change food into energy.

Cognitive function - Especially in children, iodine deficiency is one of the major causes of neurological disorders. This can impair both cognitive and motor development.

How can iodine in seaweed help?

Iodine & radiation - Seaweed is a natural source of iodine, which helps to block radiation from processing in the thyroid. "Seaweed is, without par, the top radioprotective food. It is remarkably high in polysaccharides and antioxidants, it strengthens your immune system and is the very best food source of minerals and trace minerals. And, here’s the most amazing thing: It also protects you from ambient radiation. If your thyroid is iodine (I53) deficient,* it will absorb radioactive iodine (I131) from the air, water or food. Frequently enjoying seaweed fulfills your basic I53 requirements and makes the receptor sites in your thyroid unable to absorb a single rad of I131. (While you could take a potassium iodine supplement instead, don’t settle for yet another refined substance that lacks polysaccharides, antioxidants and a full spectrum of minerals.)" -Rebecca Wood

Iodine & heavy metals - A heavy metal chelator! Seaweed can play a big role in your heavy metal detox! The iodine in seaweed binds to heavy metals like mercury and aluminum to remove them from your system. We are overwhelmed with toxins on a daily basis, through our air, water, food etc. This in turn effects every cell in your body. Evidence shows that upping your iodine consumption can help detox contaminants like fluoride and chlorine! Remember that consistency is key! Adding a seaweed supplement to your daily routine is one of the best ways to naturally support your detox pathways!

Iodine & pathogens - Did you know that iodine is capable of killing pathogens, including bacteria and viruses? "Iodine is established as having a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacterial, viral, fungal and protozoal pathogens and has been used as an antiseptic for the prevention of infection and the treatment of wounds for decades." In fact a study was conduced in 2021 evaluating the efficacy of iodine supplementation against (insert something we've been dealing with since 2019) . It was concluded that iodine supplementation was effective at inactivating the virus in vitro and suggested its application to reduce transmission. This isn't new though. Iodine has been proven effective against bacteria, spores, cysts and drug resistant bacteria such as MRSA, for decades.
